Fillings

A filling is a way to restore teeth with decay, damage or excessive wear. Often used to fill cavities, most people will receive at least one filling in their lifetime. Fillings preserve the natural tooth and help prevent future decay. The procedure is fairly quick, and can last many years!

What happens when you get a filling?

When a dentist gives you a filling, he or she first cleans the affected area and then fills the cleaned-out cavity with a filling material. Depending on your dentist’s recommendation, the material will most often be composite (plastic) or amalgam (silver).

How long do dental fillings last?

Fillings will last for many years. To ensure a long-lasting restoration we emphasize the importance of good home care (brush for two minutes twice a day and floss every day) and regular dental cleanings and examinations.

Is it normal for teeth to hurt after filling?

A tooth that has just had a filling placed will be more sensitive to hot and cold foods, air temperature, and the pressure of biting. This sensitivity should resolve within a few days. If discomfort persists, contact your dentist.

We’d love to talk to you about fillings.
