Frequent Questions

How can I find out what my out of pocket cost will be?

At Howard Family Dental we strive to provide accurate out of pocket costs to our patients. First, we must know what treatment is necessary and cannot provide estimates with-out performing an exam.

If you are taking advantage of dental insurance benefits, we will check with your insurance provider to see what coverage is expected and remaining benefits you have left. From there, we will estimate what your out of pocket expense would be, but until the insurance claim has been paid, the out of pocket cost is only an estimate.

If you are not utilizing dental insurance, we will be able to tell you your out of pocket cost based on treatment needs.

What is the difference between a restorative appointment and a hygiene appointment?

A restorative appointment is an appointment in which treatment, besides a dental cleaning or periodontal cleaning, is scheduled to occur. For example, fillings, crowns, root canals and extractions are scheduled as restorative appointments. You will see the dentist and the dental assistant at this visit. Restorative appointments are scheduled as needed, not regularly.

A hygiene appointment is an appointment in which a dental cleaning and check up are scheduled to occur. You will see your dental hygienist and the dentist. Hygiene appointments should be scheduled regularly, based on what your dental hygienist and dentist recommend. At your hygiene appointment, your dentist will check to see if there is a need for a restorative appointment.

What is the difference between and regular cleaning and periodontal treatment?

A regular dental cleaning is the cleaning of your teeth only. If you have healthy gums, you will likely need a regular dental cleaning.

Periodontal treatment and maintenance include cleaning the gums as well. There are many causes for gum disease, which causes your gums to recede or separate from your tooth. If there is a gap between the gum and the tooth, bacteria can get caught and cause damage to the tooth and gums. Periodontal treatment and maintenance are performed to remove bacteria from the area between the tooth and the gums.
