Free Dental Day – November 17 in Pooler, Georgia

Howard Family Dental is proud to offer our annual Free Dental Day, held on November 17th, 2017. The staff and dentists at Howard Family Dental will provide one free service for both children and adults; choose a cleaning, filling or extraction. The event is first come, first served and is limited to the first 175 people.

Over the last few years, the event has grown and includes many community organizations. America’s Second Harvest of Coastal Georgia and Target Distribution brings food for individuals and families that are suffering with food insecurity. Walgreens staff will also be onsite providing complimentary flu shots. Strickland’s Funeral Home and Calvary Assembly of God generously allow parking and many local restaurants offer food donations for their volunteers.

Numbers will be handed out the day of the event, beginning at 6:30 am. The event is held at our Pooler location, 91 Brighton Woods Drive, every year the Friday before Thanksgiving. It is our way of giving thanks and appreciation to the community.

Last year, Howard Family Dental Free Dental Day served 225 people and completed $65,000 worth of services.

Walk for Women’s Health & Fitness Day

The last Wednesday in September is National Women’s Health & Fitness Day, a day that encourages women to take control of their health, make healthy choices and engage in regular physical activity. This year’s theme is: “Fitness…It’s a Smart Choice for Life!”

In addition to eating right, drinking enough water and getting regular checkups, studies show that getting just 150 minutes of exercise per week could add an extra 3.4 years to your life! Women’s Health & Fitness Day is the perfect chance for us to get up, get moving and get started on our health and fitness goals.

What are the health benefits of walking?

Hippocrates famously said “Walking is the best medicine.”

And believe it or not, walking might be healthier than running. Walking briskly can lower your risk of high blood pressure, high cholesterol and diabetes as much as running – and it doesn’t put as much wear and tear on your knees and hips.

Walking also eases back pain, lowers stress and protects against dementia, osteoporosis and depression.

How long should I walk?

How long you should walk probably depends on your current level of fitness. A lot of people go by the 10,000 steps rule which amounts to roughly five miles – but that sounds a little scary to anyone just getting started! We recommend taking a walk in the morning, during your lunch break or after work, because these are great times of day to clear your mind and destress.

If you haven’t exercised in a while, try walking for five minutes, taking a break and going for another five. Research shows that doing anything physically active is infinitely better than doing nothing. So if you only make it five minutes, don’t beat yourself up – you’re doing great.

Need more help getting started?

We know it’s easier said than done. So if you’re nervous about getting started on the right foot, try sharing this post with a friend and inviting her to walk with you! Remember that health and fitness isn’t all or nothing – it’s step by step. So set a reachable goal just for today. And worry about tomorrow tomorrow.

Howard Family Dental Summit!

We hosted our annual Howard Family Dental Summit this month where team members from every office gathered for a day of motivational speakers, prizes, award, food and ‘Winter Wonderland’ fun!

“Bring your best stuff to the present moment and pour it into the lives of others.”
These are the words of Kevin Brown, whom we were lucky to hear speak this weekend. Kevin is passionate about helping people expand their vision, develop their potential and grow their results. And, as the father of an autistic child he knows firsthand how the principles of true success reach beyond the boardroom and into the lives of real people facing the challenges of everyday life. To learn more about Kevin’s story, visit http://www.kevinbrownspeaks.com/

We also heard Josh Sundquist, a bestselling author, speaker and Paralympic ski racer. Josh was diagnosed at age nine with a rare form of bone cancer, ultimately having his left leg amputated. Josh inspired us to just go for it with his stories of emotional and physical trials, dating and Paralympic skiing. To learn more about Josh’s story, visit www.joshsundquist.com
It’s rare to have all 190 team members together and we enjoyed celebrating everyone’s accomplishments and hard work. We left the day feeling inspired and ready to take on 2017!

“Kindness is like snow, it beautifies everything it touches.”

Happy 2017!

Wishing you healthy, peaceful and joyful New Year full of fun! Here’s a New Year’s Resolution we hope to see… more smiles in 2017!

Message from Girls on the Run’s Executive Director

We were able to reach 565 girls during this fall season, our largest number of girls ever.  We anticipate a large crowd on Saturday, November 12th for our fall 5K, beginning in Bryan Square which is located between The Westin and the International Trade Center.  The run begins at 8:30 AM from Bryan Square and will continue through Hutchinson Island and onto the back nine of the Club at the Harbor.   There is plenty of free parking at the International Trade Center. We will be having lots of fun before the start in our games area, having our hair painted, using the hula hoops, writing notes of gratitude and, of course, dancing to the tunes.  We hope you will join us for much of the morning. We plan to have a table and two chairs in the vendor area for you as in the past.

We are also looking for volunteers to help that morning, so please spread the word to your family, friends and co-workers!  Volunteers may also sign up on our website.  We need nearly 100 volunteers to make sure this run is safe and successful for our community.

Help spread the word — Free Dental Day is November 18th!

National Dental Hygiene Month 2016

October is National Dental Hygiene Month. For the seventh straight year, the American Dental Hygienists’ Association (ADHA) and Wrigley Oral Healthcare Program (WOHP) are dedicating this month to starting the conversation about The Daily 4.

The Daily 4

The Daily 4 represent the foundation for a healthy smile. Brushing, flossing, rinsing and chewing every day – also using proper technique – won’t guartantee perfect dental hygiene for the rest of your life, but they will improve the color of your teeth, the way your breath smells, the health of your gums and have a significant impact on your overall health. Are you doing the Daily 4 right? Keep reading for tips on technique and frequency, or head over to adha.org for some more in-depth information on #NDHM2016.

Brush: This one is easy. Brush for two minutes at least twice each day. Most people like to brush when they wake up and before they go to bed. But brushing after every meal doesn’t hurt! Are you using the correct technique when you brush? Click here to find out.

Floss: You might’ve seen some recent reports about the effectiveness of flossing. The ADHA and Mortenson Family Dental are united in our opinion — Flossing is still an important part of your dental hygiene routine. If you’d like to read more about it, check out this article we wrote.  And for tips on proper flossing technique, click here.

Rinse: Did you know teeth alone account for less than half of the mouth? Don’t forget about the rest! Rinsing with an antimicrobial mouth rinse helps eliminate biofilm and bacteria that brushing and flossing cannot. Talk with your dentist to figure out which mouth rinse is right for you. For a simple guide on rinsing, click here.

Chew: Believe it or not, chewing sugar-free gum is not just good at curing bad breath. Chewing sugar-free gum also stimulates salivary glands in your mouth, which helps clean out food and neutralize acids found on your teeth. So go ahead, chew some gum after your meal. Just make sure it’s sugar-free!

Show your support for #NDHM2016

Below is a poster you can print out and a banner that fits perfectly as your Facebook cover photo. If you’re serious about dental hygiene, show your support this month and help start the conversation!

Four F’s for a Successful Fourth of July Weekend

This Monday is the Fourth of July, a day when we celebrate declaring our independence from Great Britain in 1776. In that Declaration of Independence we talked a lot about fairness and freedom, but our founding fathers probably didn’t foresee some other F’s that would make our Independence Day the awesome holiday it’s become.

What’s your favorite F? Let us know by voting in our poll on Twitter.

Family & Friends

Mixed Race young people making selfie at garden party. Man from Jamaica Playing Guitar. Man on right holding smart phone on selfie stick. In background people holding American flag.

Oops, look at us – already cheating.  This first F is a two-for-one because it’s really all about people. A lot of families plan road trips this weekend to visit other cities, go camping or hit a theme park like Fun Zone Amusement & Sports Park. And friends will get together for grilling out, lawn games or just hanging out enjoying the weather. Whatever you decide to do, remember to pack a travel-sized toothbrush and toothpaste or some mouthwash to help those relationships get even closer!

Food

A patriotic fruit tart.

This one’s a no-brainer. We’re talking Potlucks on patios with pounds of potato salad and pints of patriotic ice cream flavors. There is nothing quite like a hamburger, hot dog or veggies off the grill in the summer. Throw in an ice-cold glass of sweet tea to wash it down, and you’ll know you’re doing it right.

Don’t forget to drink a glass of water after your meal to wash some of that sugar off your teeth!

Fireworks

friend running with fireworks on a beach afer sunsetWho doesn’t love running around with sparklers after dark or shooting roman candles into the sky and hearing them pop? It really doesn’t matter how many times you’ve heard “I’m Proud to be an American” blaring over a loudspeaker as you watch fireworks light up your city, it’s awesome every time. ‘Nuff said.

Floss Fun

Group of teen girls laughing and eating ice cream at the beach together

You knew we were going to do it, didn’t you? Well here’s your reminder to floss every day. But the last one is not “Floss” and it’s actually the most important F of the weekend: FUN. Our country has come a long way in its short history and though we’ve been through a lot, we have a lot to be proud of! So let’s remember this weekend to enjoy good company, good food and have a great time celebrating what makes us unique.

Have a safe and happy Independence Day!
